Chairman, Senate Committee on South-East Development Commission, SEDC, Sen. Orji Uzor Kalu, has insisted that the Commission must operate from the South-East, in line with its establishment.
This is contained in a statement in Abuja, following an assessment of the Commission’s headquarters facilities.
The statement expresses satisfaction with progress on its headquarters project in Enugu State.
It urges the SEDC management to sustain the pace of work, stating that members of the Senate committee will visit Enugu in December to assess further progress on the project.
“So far, we are making very good progress, unlike when we started. I am sure my colleagues and I are seeing serious progress,” he states.
According to the statement, the senator, who represents Abia North Senatorial District, also calls on the Commission to extend its activities to communities across the South-East to ensure that residents benefit directly from its programmes and interventions.
The statement describes the headquarters building as a good edifice and said the progress recorded so far was encouraging.
“The only problem that I raised before, and I repeat, is that they cannot operate from Abuja. They must operate from where they are set up. This is where they are located,” he said.
It states that the dispute over the Commission’s location had been resolved following the inspection of its facilities in Enugu.
“Our quarrel before was about being in Abuja and not in Enugu. So that quarrel is over now” he stresses
The statement acknowledges that the SEDC was less than one year old but expressed optimism about its progress, urging the management to maintain the momentum and ensure that its presence translated into tangible development across the region.
“It is a new Commission, less than one year. We are making progress. We are impressed with what we have seen so far. So far, so good,” he adds.
