Twenty-two members of the Kano State House of Assembly, including the Speaker and his Deputy, have resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, while pledging support for Governor Abba Yusuf.
Also leaving the party are the Deputy Speaker, Muhammad Butu-Butu; the Majority Leader, Lawan Hussain; the Deputy Majority Leader, Garba Fammar; and the Chief Whip, Muddasir Zawachiki.
The lawmakers, however, declared their continued support for Governor Abba Yusuf.
This development was confirmed in a statement issued on Saturday by the Press Secretary of the Kano State House of Assembly, Kamaludden Shawai, and made available to journalists in Kano.
Shawai explained that the affected lawmakers represent constituencies including Ajingi, Albasu, Bagwai/Shanono, Bebeji, Bunkure, Dawakin Kudu, Fagge, Gabasawa, Garko, Gwale, Karaye, Kura/Garun Malam, Madobi, Minjibir, Rano, Tarauni and Wudil.
He said a total of twenty-two lawmakers were involved in the defection, adding that the House has verified and authenticated the list as released.
The Assembly said the announcement was made to clearly inform the public of the political position of the lawmakers following the governor’s resignation from the NNPP.
