The Labour Party State Chairmen Forum has rejected a memo from the party’s Caretaker Committee seeking to hold a fresh congress from March 26, 2026, describing it as unconstitutional and in violation of party rules.
The forum, comprising all state chairmen elected in December 2025, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to sanction Senator Nenadi Usman and her group for attempting to override the party constitution.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party Obiora Ifoh in Abuja.
According to the statement, INEC had earlier refused Usman’s request, warning that the Caretaker Committee could not act on behalf of the party.
It states that only the National Executive Committee (NEC) has the authority to fix dates and rules for congresses.
It explains that State, Local Government, and Ward executives serve four-year terms, and any attempt to dissolve these elected structures is unlawful.
The statement describes Usman’s March 3 memo to INEC as “dead on arrival” and called for an INEC officer to oversee the party to prevent further violations.
It reiterates that the party has also appealed a Federal High Court judgment related to the matter, emphasizing that the tenure of elected officers is sacrosanct under the Labour Party constitution.
