The Air Component Commander of Joint Task Force South South, Group Captain Abdulafeez Opaleye, has raised concerns that frequent legal actions by host communities are hampering air operations against oil thieves and economic saboteurs in the Niger Delta.
Addressing defence correspondents in Port Harcourt, Group Captain Opaleye said litigation over alleged collateral damage from air strikes on illegal refining sites has slowed the Nigerian Air Force’s efforts to protect national assets.
He noted that oil theft syndicates are increasingly sophisticated, making interdiction more challenging.
The commander stressed that poor community support and engagement remain critical obstacles, urging residents to see security forces as partners in safeguarding resources.
Despite challenges, he said progress is being made through enhanced training, inter-agency coordination, and government support.
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Michael Onoja,
also highlighted the need for effective communication and information management to improve public perception of military operations.
