Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has criticised the process surrounding the new tax bill before the National Assembly, describing it as an affront and expressing concern that state governors were largely unaware of its contents.
Governor Makinde said the state executives were not consulted before the bill was transmitted by the Presidency, making it impossible for them to take a definitive position or provide meaningful input.
He urged that the bill be returned for wider consultations to ensure transparency and inclusiveness.
“The only goal is to bring the tax bill back so we can all have an opportunity to look at it and discuss it,” Makinde said,
He added that governors remain unaware of the final content of the bill and any legislative actions already taken.
He stressed that proper engagement with state governments is necessary before any legislative progress can be made on the proposed tax legislation.
