The Minister of Regional Development, Abubakar Momoh, has described the late Niger Delta leader, Edwin Clark, as a symbol of courage and national unity whose legacies remain indelible in Nigeria’s political history.
The minister, represented by Dr. Chris Oghenechovwe, spoke at the first anniversary remembrance held in Kiagbodo, Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
The event was organised by the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and attended by prominent stakeholders from across the region.
Leading the delegation was former Nigerian Ambassador to Sweden, Godknows Igali, alongside other top Niger Deltans.
The group first paid homage at the palace of HRM Ogiogio II, Pere of Igbilebri Mein Kingdom, before proceeding to a thanksgiving service at Edwin Clark University and a wreath-laying ceremony at the graveside of the elder statesman.
Speakers at the event described Clark as a fearless advocate who stood firmly against injustice and fought for the rights of the Niger Delta and the unity of Nigeria.
They recalled his intervention during periods of unrest that once reduced oil production drastically, noting that his engagement with regional leaders and youths helped stabilise output and restore confidence in the sector.
The occasion also drew PANDEF National Executive members and chapter leaders from across the country.
While celebrating his contributions, stakeholders reiterated calls for sustained efforts to address long-standing development challenges in the Niger Delta, including infrastructure deficits and the revitalisation of key economic assets.
The statement was signed by PANDEF National Spokesman, Chief Dr. Obiuwevbi Ominimini.
