The Nasarawa State government has arrested three Chinese nationals employed by Lidel Mining Company for violating directives to stay off mining sites due to environmental concerns.
The arrests were made during an environmental impact assessment visit led by the State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Margaret Elayo, to the Endo mining site.

The action follows the state government’s growing concerns over the exploitation of local communities and environmental degradation by foreign mining companies.
Dr. Elayo revealed alarming conditions at the site, including unreclaimed land, deep pits, and significant environmental risks.

She declared an immediate halt to all mining operations at the site until the company meets necessary environmental regulations.
Tensions escalated when workers protested the halt in operations, damaging the commissioner’s vehicle and attacking her security detail.

The situation was quickly controlled by joint security forces, leading to the arrest of the three Chinese nationals.

Dr Elayo also raised concerns about the harsh working conditions faced by local labourers, who, she said, endure poor compensation and unsafe working environments.
