The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, has confirmed the death of one of its officers during a raid on a notorious drug enclave in Bonny Island, Rivers State.
The Agency says its operatives stormed the area known as Ama Hausa, leading to the arrest of six suspects, including a gang leader allegedly linked to the killing.
A statement by the NDLEA Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, says a large cache of illicit drugs such as cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, skunk and tramadol was recovered during the operation.
According to the statement, Chief Narcotic Agent Sadiq Mujahid sustained severe head injuries after suspected drug dealers mobilised armed hoodlums to attack the operatives in an attempt to resist arrest.
He was rushed to the Bonny Island General Hospital but later died from the injuries.
Reacting to the development, NDLEA Chairman, retired Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, commended the bravery of the officers, noting that despite the violent attack, they overpowered the assailants, arrested the suspects and seized the drugs.
General Marwa described the late officer as courageous and disciplined, assuring that his sacrifice would not be in vain.
He extended condolences to the family of the deceased and the Rivers State Command, stressing that attacks on NDLEA personnel would attract serious consequences.
The Agency says it remains committed to intensifying its operations against drug trafficking across the country.
