As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark World Cancer Day, the Initiative for Advancement of the Albinism Cause (INAAC) is appealing for policies and partnerships aimed at reducing the incidence of skin cancer among individuals with albinism in Nigeria.
This is contained in a Statement signed by the Executive Director, Ms
Joy Odigie, in Benin City.
According to the statement, the initiative is critical, as persons with albinism are particularly vulnerable to skin cancer due to the low presence of melanin in their skin, a pigmentation that provides protection against harmful UV rays from the sun.
It notes that the initiative is seeking support for three individuals with albinism battling skin cancer in Edo State.
The statement emphasize that INAAC believes that tailored interventions and community support can significantly improve outcomes for those with albinism facing skin cancer and appeals to individuals, organisations, and government bodies to join this cause to develop policies that enhance healthcare access and education for vulnerable populations.
