Residents of the Niger Delta have expressed serious concerns over health and environmental risks linked to oil theft, illegal refining, and spills in the region.
Speaking at rallies organised by the Niger Delta Peace & Security Forum in Yenagoa and Port Harcourt, community leaders warned that these activities are causing pollution, destruction of waterways and farmlands, contamination of drinking water, and loss of livelihoods.
The Forum’s Convener, Inko-Tariah Michael, acknowledged recent efforts by the Nigerian military to curb oil theft but stressed the need for sustained action, environmental remediation, and support for affected communities.
Participants urged closer collaboration between host communities, security agencies, environmental regulators, and government authorities to protect public health, preserve the environment, and ensure a sustainable future for the region.
