The trade volume between Nigeria and China has surpassed $20 billion in 2024.
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, stated this at the 2025 Chinese Lunar New Year celebration held in Abuja.
Ambassador Yu who described 2024 as a landmark year for both nations relations, expressed optimism for an even stronger relationship in 2025.
The envoy noted that Nigeria ranks as China’s largest engineering contract hub, second-largest export market, and third-largest trade partner in Africa.
He emphasized the importance of cultural and people-to-people exchanges, which are critical pillars of the bilateral relationship.
Yu also extended New Year wishes to the Chinese and Nigerian communities, saying the year of the snake symbolizes hard work, intelligence, and happiness, which he hopes will bring peace and prosperity to both nations.
Speaking at the event, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and Creative Economy, Mr. Oraeluno Raphael Obi, highlighted the historical ties between the two countries, which are built on mutual respect and shared aspirations.
Mr. Obi described the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria and China as a foundation for fostering stronger collaboration, particularly in culture, art, and tourism. He reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to implementing policies that promote bilateral cultural ties.
Also commenting, the Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, Mr. Xu Zhen Tao, praised the long-standing friendship between Nigeria and China. He highlighted the role of the Belt and Road Initiative in strengthening bilateral ties and promoting global stability and prosperity.
Meanwhile, Professor Sheriff Ghali Ibrahim, Director of the Centre for Contemporary China-Africa Research, emphasized the importance of cultural integration, noting that such exchanges promote mutual understanding and peaceful coexistence.
The event, which hosted over 2,000 guests, both Nigerian and Chinese, featured cultural performances, exhibitions, and culinary delights, celebrating the vibrant traditions of both nations.
