Nigeria and Spain have reaffirmed commitment to deepening diplomatic relations with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on political consultations.
The agreement was signed in Madrid by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares.
The MoU establishes a framework for regular dialogue to enhance cooperation in key areas of mutual interest.
Speaking during the meeting, both ministers highlighted Nigeria’s strategic importance to Spain in West Africa and Spain’s role as a key ally for Nigeria within the European Union.
They pledged to strengthen collaboration in economic development, security, education, energy, and climate change.
Discussions also focused on regional stability, particularly in the Sahel and West Africa, where the role of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) was acknowledged as crucial.
On international issues, the ministers exchanged views on the situations in Gaza and Ukraine, reaffirming their commitment to peace, stability, and international law.
They described the meeting as a step forward in strengthening relations between both nations and deepening Africa-Europe cooperation.
