Nigeria and Türkiye have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and ensuring full implementation of agreements reached during President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent state visit to Ankara.
This was the focus of discussions in Abuja when the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, received the Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Mehmet Poroy.
Ambassador Poroy described the presidential visit as a major milestone that has further deepened relations between both countries as strategic partners.
He commended the Nigerian government for the coordination that ensured the success of the visit and expressed Türkiye’s readiness to implement the outcomes.
Responding, Ambassador Tuggar characterised the visit as historic and transformative, noting that it has opened a new chapter in Nigeria–Türkiye relations and laid a solid foundation for mutually beneficial cooperation.
The Foreign Affairs Minister highlighted the signing of nine agreements during the visit, covering key sectors such as trade, security, technology transfer and diplomatic collaboration.
He said the agreements are expected to deliver tangible benefits to both countries.
Ambassador Tuggar also called for enhanced cooperation in capacity building, particularly between Nigeria’s Foreign Service Academy in Lagos and the Turkish Diplomatic Institute, to strengthen diplomatic training and professional exchange.
Both sides agreed to sustain active communication and follow-up mechanisms, with plans underway for a Political Consultative Meeting later in the year to assess progress.
The Turkish envoy reaffirmed his country’s commitment to expanding economic and diplomatic engagement with Nigeria, especially in investment, defence cooperation and education.
