A Nigerian-born nurse, Chimzuruoke Okembunachi, has lost her nursing licence in Australia after being found guilty of professional misconduct.
An Australian tribunal ruled that the 25-year-old repeatedly slept while on night duty at an aged care facility in western Sydney, placing elderly residents at risk.
The incidents occurred in March 2024 when she was the only registered nurse on duty, supervising about 100 residents.
Findings revealed that on several occasions, patients missed prescribed medication, including morphine, and unqualified staff were instructed to administer drugs.
Although the tribunal acknowledged her remorse, it said her actions had the potential to endanger lives and ordered the cancellation of her nursing registration.
Ms Okembunachi, who moved to Australia in 2018, has since resigned from nursing and is currently studying medicine.
She will not be eligible to apply for a review of the decision for at least nine months.
