The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to take immediate and appropriate action in the event of a snake bite, describing it as a medical emergency that requires urgent attention.
The advisory follows renewed public concern over snake bite incidents, including the recent death of a music artiste in the Federal Capital Territory.
In a public awareness message shared on its official social media platform, the Agency emphasized the importance of remaining calm and avoiding harmful first-aid practices that could worsen the victim’s condition.
NOA warned against the use of tourniquets, cutting the wound, attempting to suck out venom, applying ice, or resorting to traditional remedies.
It also advised against taking alcohol, caffeine, or certain pain relievers such as aspirin and ibuprofen, which may increase bleeding.
The Agency recommended that victims should move away from the snake to avoid further attacks, keep the affected limb still and below heart level, and remove tight clothing or jewellery that could restrict blood flow.
If the victim becomes unconscious, NOA advised placing the person on their side to prevent choking.
The Agency stressed that the most critical step is to seek immediate medical care at the nearest health facility, noting that early and correct intervention can significantly improve survival chances.
