The Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, has urged the Federal Government to set aside political considerations and reverse its decision in the appointment of unqualified persons into the Executive Engineering positions in the Nation’s River Basin Development Authorities to save the country from mediocrity.
This is contained in a statement signed by the President, Nigerian Society of Engineers, Mrs Margret Aina Oguntala in Abuja.
It says the recent reconstitution of the Executive Management of the twelve River Basin Development Authorities under the Federal Ministry of Water Resources did not look at capacity and professional background of those appointed.
The statement explains that NSE has reviewed the composition of the various River Basin Development Authory boards and noticed that many of the appointees assigned to manage the critical engineering positions, namely Executive Director, Engineering and Executive Director, Planning and Design lack the necessary qualifications and professional credentials.
According to statement, the River Basin Development Authorities plays a pivotal role in ensuring the efficient administration and equitable distribution of the nation’s water resources, which are essential for agricultural productivity, environmental sustainability and economic growth.
Its emphasizes that it is vital that these Authorities are overseen by individuals who posses both the technical expertise and professional qualifications required to navigate the complex engineering challenges of the industry.
The appointment of personnel without the requisite engineering qualifications undermines the integrity of these institutions and jeopardises the ability to fulfil their mandates effectivel and raises serious questions about the commitment of the Federal Government to uphold standards of professionalism in governance, particularly in sectors that directly impact the livelihood of millions of Nigerians.
It calls on civil society and concerned citizens to join in voicing this critical issue to help government in making the right choices, ensuring that the nation’s infrastructure management are led by competent, qualified professionals who can navigate the complexities of resource management for sustainable development.
