The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has launched an investigation into an Arik Air Boeing 737 flight that was forced to divert mid-air after developing an engine problem.
The Lagos-to-Port Harcourt flight safely landed at Benin Airport with all 80 passengers and crew disembarking without injury.
According to NSIB spokesperson Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, the incident occurred during the cruise phase when the crew detected abnormal engine indications.
Following standard safety procedures, the pilots shut down the affected engine and diverted the aircraft to Benin, ensuring a safe landing.
Initial inspections revealed significant damage to the engine.
NSIB has deployed a team to secure the aircraft, collect evidence, interview relevant personnel, and retrieve flight data and cockpit voice recordings.
The agency is working closely with aviation regulators and Arik Air to determine the cause of the occurrence.
The Bureau reassured the public that passenger safety remains its top priority and stated that a preliminary report is expected within 30 days, with further updates to follow as the investigation progresses.
