The Obidient Movement has dismissed claims that it promotes divisive rhetoric within the African Democratic Congress, ADC–led coalition, describing the allegations as a misrepresentation of its ideals.
The group was reacting to comments by the ADC spokesperson, Bolaji Abdullahi, who cautioned supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, against what he termed divisive messaging ahead of the party’s June primaries.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Obidient Movement said it emerged not from extremism, but from widespread dissatisfaction with poor governance, poverty, and lack of accountability in Nigeria’s political system.
The movement stressed that participation in a political coalition does not require silence or blind loyalty, but active engagement and scrutiny, adding that passionate political expression is a normal feature of democratic reform movements.
It also rejected portrayals of its supporters as a rigid group, describing Obidients as Nigerians from diverse backgrounds united by demands for transparency, competence, and accountable leadership.
