The Obidient Movement has called on Nigerians to remain vigilant and protect their votes during the 2027 general elections, following recent comments by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on the All Progressives Congress, APC, campaign in the FCT and Rivers State.
A statement signed by its Director of Media and Communications, Onyeka Dike, in Abuja, expresses concern over Wike’s reported declaration that he would lead President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign in the two territories.
It urges political leaders to respect the electoral process and allow voters to freely determine their preferred candidates through credible elections.
The statement stresses that the FCT and Rivers State, like other parts of the country, belonged to their residents and electorate, who had the constitutional right to choose their leaders.
It maintains that political campaign responsibilities should not be interpreted as control over voters or the electoral process, adding that election outcomes must reflect the choices made by the electorate.
According to the statement, the Movement calls on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and security agencies to ensure that the 2027 elections were conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
It also urges Nigerians to participate actively in the electoral process, safeguard their votes, document suspected irregularities and report credible evidence to the appropriate authorities.
The statement emphasises the need for political parties and their supporters to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect the rights of citizens to make independent electoral choices.
It further calls for accountability in the electoral process, stressing that any proven violation of electoral laws should be investigated and addressed through the appropriate legal channels.
“The credibility of the 2027 elections would depend on the ability of relevant institutions to protect the integrity of the ballot and ensure that every valid vote counted”
It urges political actors to focus on presenting their programmes and records to Nigerians, allowing the electorate to decide who should govern the country.
The statement reaffirms the Movement’s position that the 2027 elections should be determined by the Nigerian people through a free, fair and credible process.
