The Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, has called for restraint, dialogue, and mutual forbearance among all political actors in Rivers State following the recent escalation of political tensions in the state.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed by the Amanyanabo of Twon-Brass and Co-Chairman of PANDEF’s Board of Trustees, King Alfred Diete-Spiff; former Governor of Akwa Ibom State and Co-Chairman of the Board, Obong Victor Attah; and the National Chairman of PANDEF, Ambassador Godknows Igali in Abuja.
The statement expresses grave concern over the political developments that have now culminated in the Rivers State House of Assembly initiating impeachment proceedings against the Governor and Deputy Governor of the state.
According to the statement the apex socio-political body of the South-South zone describes the situation as deeply disturbing, warning that it could threaten peace, stability, and public order in Rivers State, which remains a strategic and economic hub of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.
It appeals to all parties involved to sheathe their swords and embrace peace, guided by the principles of dialogue, tolerance, political maturity, and mutual understanding.
The statement stresses that the welfare of the people, development of the state, and regional stability must take precedence over political disagreements.
The PANDEF commends President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, respected elders of Rivers State, and other well-meaning Nigerians for their efforts towards restoring peace in the state.
In furtherance of its long-standing peace-building mandate, PANDEF announces the constitution of a high-powered reconciliation committee chaired by former Attorney-General of the Federation, Chief Kanu Agabi, SAN.
Other members of the committee include former Senator for Edo North, Senator Obende Domingo; former Minister of Housing, Rt. Hon. Essien Nduese, retired Federal Permanent Secretary, Dr Timiebi Koripamo-Agari, former Director of the Department of State Services, Chief Mike Ejiofor, former Cross River State Attorney-General, Mrs Nella Rabana-Andem, SAN, and the Deputy National Secretary of PANDEF, Prince Godwin Okotie, who will serve as Secretary.
The statement calls on all political stakeholders in Rivers State to fully cooperate with the committee in order to achieve a peaceful, fair, and sustainable resolution through an inclusive and transparent process.
