The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu over Nigeria’s latest position in the Global Terrorism Index, describing it as a reflection of worsening national security.
In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the party said Nigeria’s ranking as the fourth most impacted country in the 2026 Global Terrorism Index highlights what it termed the government’s failure to effectively safeguard lives and property.
The report, published by the Institute for Economics and Peace, shows that Nigeria recorded 750 terrorism-related deaths in 2025, representing a 46 per cent increase from the previous year.
It also identified the Sahel region as the global epicentre of terrorism for the third consecutive year.
The PDP noted that Nigeria, alongside four other countries, accounts for nearly 70 per cent of global terrorism deaths, stressing that the development aligns with the growing insecurity experienced across the country.
From a policy standpoint, the opposition party called for a shift from what it described as reactive security responses to a more comprehensive, proactive strategy.
It advocated a “whole-of-society” approach involving government, security agencies, and communities to address the root causes of insecurity.
The party also urged the Federal Government to prioritise both immediate measures to halt attacks and long-term policies that promote sustainable peace and stability.
Reiterating its position, the PDP maintained that ensuring the safety of citizens remains the fundamental responsibility of government, urging authorities to strengthen coordination, intelligence gathering, and community-based security interventions.
