The Ogun State Police Command has arrested fourteen suspects for unlawful assembly and suspected cult-related activities in Ipara, Ode and Isara-Remo areas of the state.
The arrest followed a covert, intelligence-led operation carried out in the early hours of Saturday by operatives of the Anti-Cultism Unit and the Special Weapons and Tactics, SWAT, team, with support from divisional police units.
Police said actionable intelligence revealed that members of the Eiye Confraternity had gathered at a bush location in Ipara-Remo to initiate new members and plan activities capable of breaching public peace.
During the operation, police recovered three locally made pistols, eleven cartridges, four rounds of 9mm ammunition, confraternity caps, a drum allegedly used for initiation, charms, nineteen mobile phones and nine vehicles of various brands.
Some of the vehicles were reportedly without number plates, while others bore unauthorised dealer plates.
The suspects, comprising thirteen males and one female, are currently undergoing investigation.
The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, condemned cultism and all forms of unlawful assembly, urging youths to renounce criminal activities while assuring residents of the command’s commitment to public safety.
The Police Command has also encouraged members of the public to report suspicious activities through its emergency lines as efforts continue to apprehend other fleeing suspects and maintain peace across the state.
