Electricity supply has been restored to parts of the country following Nigeria’s first national grid collapse of 2026, as recovery efforts by system operators continue.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, said the grid suffered a system-wide disturbance at about 12:40 p.m. on Friday, January 23, resulting in a total blackout across the national transmission network.
Preliminary findings indicate that the collapse was caused by the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330 kilovolt transmission lines, as well as the disconnection of some power-generating units.
NISO said grid restoration began at about 1:15 p.m., in line with established recovery and black-start procedures.
According to the operator, power has now been restored to Abuja, Lagos, Osogbo, Benin, Onitsha, Sakete, Jebba, Kainji and Shiroro, while efforts are ongoing to reconnect other parts of the country.
The earlier outage saw national power generation drop to zero megawatts, leaving most electricity distribution companies without load allocation.
NISO has assured Nigerians that investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing, adding that full restoration and stabilisation of the grid remain a top priority.
