President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has described the late Senator representing Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Godiya Akwashiki, as a principled and forthright politician whose word was his bond.
Senator Akpabio made the remarks during a condolence visit to the family of the late lawmaker in Lafia, Nasarawa State, following his burial.
He assured the widow and family that they were not alone, noting that Senator Akwashiki had built strong relationships across the country which would continue to provide support to the family.
According to the Senate President, the death of Senator Akwashiki is a great loss not only to Nasarawa State but to the National Assembly and the nation, coming shortly after the demise of Senators Ifeanyi Ubah and Okey Ezea.
Late Senator Godiya Akwashiki represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, SDP.
He was first elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023.
Born in Angba Iggah, Nasarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, the late senator also served as a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to become Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker.
At the National Assembly,
Senator Akwashiki served as Chairman, Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Vice Chairman, Media and Public Affairs, and Chairman, Senate Committee on Air Force.
Senator Akpabio described the late lawmaker as a committed patriot who worked tirelessly for the development of Nasarawa State and Nigeria.
