There was a peaceful protest in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Friday, as indigenes and residents expressed concern over developments surrounding the selection of the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
The protesters converged on the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Archway and marched through major routes to the Ijebu Ode Local Government Headquarters at Itoro, calling for transparency and adherence to due process in the traditional succession process.
The protest followed a circular issued by the Ogun State Government on January 20, 2026, directing kingmakers to suspend further actions in the selection process.
The directive was signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr. Ganiyu Hamzat.
The suspension came after leaders of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House reportedly submitted a list of ninety-five nominees for consideration by the kingmakers.
Some residents allege that the government’s intervention could undermine the traditional role of kingmakers, raising fears of undue influence in the emergence of the next Awujale.
However, the state government has not officially responded to the allegations.
Speaking during the protest, the leader of the peaceful demonstration, Mrs. Adenugba Obileye, said the group was at the local government headquarters to register its displeasure and to call on all relevant authorities to respect established customs and allow the process to follow laid-down procedures.
Security operatives were present at the protest, and the situation remained calm as of the time of this report.
