Tension was reported in Abuja as aggrieved workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, confronted the motorcade of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, during an ongoing protest over unresolved welfare and salary issues.
The workers, who are on an indefinite strike, were seen in a video circulating online chanting and moving toward the minister’s convoy as it passed through the area, demanding attention to their grievances.
The strike, which began last week, followed what the workers described as the authorities’ failure to address long-standing labour and welfare concerns.
The action has resulted in the shutdown of activities across several government offices in the Federal Capital Territory.
In response, the FCT Minister and the FCTA have taken the Joint Unions Action Committee, JUAC, to court over the industrial action.
The suit, filed at the Abuja Division of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria, is scheduled for hearing today.
Court documents show that the defendants are the President of JUAC, Rifkatu Iortyer, and the Secretary-General, Abdullahi Saleh, sued in their representative capacities.
