The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to find an alternative ways of resettling Indigenous people of the FCT with Other
Persons Residing within the territory
In a motion sponsored by the member representing Keffi Karu Kokona Federal Constituency of Nasarawa State, Jonathan Gaza, the House expressed concerns over urbanization threatening indigenous communities in the FCT.
In by lead debate by Mr. Gaza, the Green Chamber noted that the FCT’s rapid urbanization is destroying the cultural and historical heritage of native communities, while also creating slums and safe havens for criminal activities.
Mr. Gaza expressed worries that previous resettlement policies have yielded little results, with five policies formulated by the Department of Resettlement having minimal impact.
Adopting the motion, the house mandated the Committee on FCT Area Council and Ancillary Matters to work with the Minister of Federal Capital Territory to develop alternative resettlement strategies and report back within four weeks
