The House of Representatives has approved 13th of February as Murtala Muhammad Day.
Announcing the Day, the Speaker House of Representatives Dr. Tajudeen Abbas, said the approval was in recognition of the late leader patriotic and democratic role in nation’s building and promoting unity of Nigeria.
Dr. Abbas said the National Assembly as an institution would continue to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices of the nation’s past leaders in keeping the country as one united family.
General Murtala Muhammad who was assassinated on the 13th of February, 1976 in an abortive coup was responsible for the drafting of a new constitution that returned Nigeria to
civilian rule in 1979.
He also set up a committee on a new federal capital which findings culminated in the change of the Federal capital from Lagos to Abuja.
