A three storey building has collapsed in Awka the Anambra state capital.
The building which is still under construction and situated along the Enugu-Onitsha expressway was awaiting roofing, before it collapsed.
Though some eye witnesses say they were not sure of the casualty figure yet, they however said some artisans who were engaged in construction work in the building were trapped.
According to an eyewitness, Mr. Daniel, who is a resident of the area, said he heard a series of thunderous sounds and rushed out to investigate, only to witness the building crumbling to the ground.
Men of the State Fire Service were also on ground trying to rescue some of the trapped victims.
The cause of the collapse has however not been ascertained, as state government officials from the material testing department of ministry of housing were still arriving the scene.
Also officials of the Awka Capital Territory Development Authority (ACTDA) visited the site of the building which collapsed at about half past 5 in the evening.
The Managing Director of ACTDA, Mr Ossy Onuko said the agency has immediately constituted a panel of inquiry to determine the remote and immediate cause of the collapse.
He noted that further details will be communicated to the public after due investigation.
Meanwhile some victims who sustained various degrees of injuries had been rescued as at the time of filling this report.
