The Social Democratic Party, FCT Chapter has called for the cancellation of the ongoing elections over growing reports of irregularities by its members.
The FCT Publicity Secretary of the party, Taye Ojo, made the call during a protest to the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
He explained that the issue has been officially reported to the party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam to urgently address the issue.
The spokesman cited a lack of transparency in the sale of nomination forms, the absence of a Congress elections notice, disenfranchisement of members as some of the noticeable infractions.
According to him, there was no official communication or public release of information regarding the commencement, process, or deadline for the sale of nomination forms.
Ojo lamented that this deprived interested party members of the opportunity to purchase and submit their forms, thereby undermining fairness and inclusivity.
“No formal notice was issued to notify party members about the dates, venues, modalities, or guidelines for the Congress elections. This blatant disregard for due process and the party’s constitutional provisions effectively excluded the participation of a majority of eligible stakeholders” he noted.
According to him, there was no official communication or public release of information regarding the commencement, process, or deadline for the sale of nomination forms.
“The conduct of the elections without prior notification and transparency has disenfranchised several loyal and eligible members of the party from exercising their civic and political rights, which is a direct violation of democratic principles and the SDP’s commitment to internal democracy.
“In view of the above irregularities, we hereby demand the immediate suspension of the ongoing Congress elections and the cancellation of all Congresses held so far, including those conducted on the 1st of May 2025.
“These actions are necessary to restore the credibility of the process and uphold the integrity of our great party”
“We urge the National Working Committee under your leadership to take swift and decisive action in the interest of justice, fairness, and party unity.”
