The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has congratulated Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
A statement signed by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, in Abuja describes the appointment as “a breath of fresh air”, adding that it reflects a strong national desire for credible electoral leadership.
According to the statement, Professor Amupitan, who replaces Professor Mahmood Yakubu after 10 years in office, is being widely praised across the country — a sentiment the SDP says shows how much hope Nigerians have placed on this new leadership.
The statement urges the new INEC boss to prioritise national interest and uphold the rule of law, especially as the country approaches key off-cycle elections in Anambra, Ekiti, and Osun states — and, ultimately, the 2027 general elections.
It calls on the new chairman to respect the independence of political parties, improve public confidence in INEC, and introduce innovations that meet global standards.
The party calls on all political actors, civil society, and citizens to support the new INEC chairman in this crucial national assignment.
