The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has announced with deep sorrow the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District under the party’s platform.
This is contained in a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, in Abuja.
The statement says members of the party nationwide received the news of the Senator’s passing with shock and profound grief.
According to the statement, Senator Godiya Akwashiki was elected into the 10th National Assembly on the platform of the Social Democratic Party, having earlier served in the 9th National Assembly between 2019 and 2023, before securing re-election in 2023.
“The late lawmaker was described as a seasoned and successful political figure in Nasarawa State. He previously served as a member of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, where he rose to the position of Majority Leader and later Deputy Speaker”
It explains that at the National Assembly, Senator Akwashiki served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Affairs, Vice Chairman of the Committee on Media and Public Affairs, as well as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Air Force.
The statement notes that the late Senator made remarkable contributions to the socio-political development of Nasarawa North and the state at large, earning a reputation as a strong grassroots politician.
According to the statement, his death has created a significant vacuum within the Social Democratic Party and will be deeply missed by the party, his constituents, and the political landscape of Nasarawa State.
It expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Senator, the people of Nasarawa North Senatorial District, and the Nasarawa State Government, while praying for the repose of his soul and for God to grant his family the strength to bear the loss.
