The Nigerian Senate has deferred consideration of the report on the review of the Electoral Act 2022 and the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, 2025.
Senate Leader, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, moved a motion for senators to take the report home for further review, which was seconded and approved.
A closed-door session lasting about three hours was held to address outstanding issues.
Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, announced the formation of a special committee to collate contributions from senators and present a final report during plenary next week.
The committee is chaired by Senator Niyi Adegbonmire, with Dr Emmanuel Odoh as secretary, and includes seven other senators representing various states.
The panel has three days to conclude its work and revert to the Senate ahead of the next legislative sitting scheduled for Tuesday.
The deferment reflects the Senate’s commitment to thorough legislative scrutiny of amendments to the Electoral Act before final passage.
