Senator Mao Ohuabunwa has been elected and sworn in as the new Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), replacing former Senate President Adolphus Wabara.
The development was confirmed in a statement personally signed by Ohuabunwa in Abuja.
According to the statement, his emergence followed the suspension of Wabara months ago by the Abia State chapter of the PDP, a decision that had left the influential BoT leadership position vacant until now.
It explains that Ohuabunwa’s appointment marks a new phase in the party’s internal leadership restructuring, especially as the PDP seeks to reposition itself ahead of future elections.
According to the statement, Until his appointment, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa represented the Abia North Senatorial District in the National Assembly, where he served from 2015 to 2019 and currently the PRO- Chancellor and Chairman Governing Board of University of Port Harcout
It states that he had earlier served two terms in the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2007, representing the Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency and was elected Deputy House Leader and also served as leader of the South East Caucus in the National Assembly.
Beyond his legislative career, Ohuabunwa has remained a strong pillar within the PDP.
He is a member of the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) and has played strategic roles in party organization and campaigns.
According to the statement he chaired the Abia State PDP Campaign Advisory Council ahead of the 2023 general election, where he worked to consolidate the party’s grassroots support in the South East.
The statement describes him as a respected voice in national and regional politics, that has been advocating for equity and power balance within the PDP.
It says the PDP Board of Trustees serves as the party’s conscience and advisory organ, providing strategic guidance to the National Working Committee and ensuring adherence to the founding principles of the party.
The statement adds that with Ohuabunwa now at the helm, expectations are high that the BoT will play a more active role in steering the party’s reconciliation and rebuilding process as it prepares for upcoming elections.
