A group of thirteen Senators, mostly from the minority caucus, has clarified that the Senate did not reject electronic transmission of election results in the proposed 2026 Electoral Bill.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the lawmakers, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe of Abia South, said media reports suggesting that the Senate discarded the provision were misleading.
They reaffirmed their support for Section 60, Subsection 3 of the bill, which mandates the electronic transmission of results from polling units to INEC’s IREV portal in real time.
Senator Abaribe stressed that what was passed by the Senate remains electronic transmission of results, as earlier provided in the 2022 Electoral Act.
He assured Nigerians that the lawmakers would closely monitor the provision until the bill receives presidential assent.
Also speaking, Senator Abdul Ningi described the reports of rejection as painful and unnecessary, emphasizing that at no time did the Senate abandon the legal backing for electronic transmission of results for the 2027 general elections.
Other Senators present at the briefing included members from the PDP, APC, Labour Party, and ADC, reflecting cross-party support for the provision.
