The Nigerian Society of Economic Geologists, NSEG, says the Solid Minerals Development Fund, SMDF, under the leadership of its Executive Secretary, Hajiya Fatima Umaru Shinkafi, is supporting mineral exploration, research and investment to promote the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The Society made this known in Kaduna while conferring an Honorary Fellowship Award on Shinkafi in recognition of her support for the Society and commitment to advancing the geoscience profession and Nigeria’s mining industry.
NSEG noted that the SMDF’s initiatives, particularly the Early-Stage Mineral Exploration and Research Grant Endowment, EMERGE, are helping to address funding gaps in mineral exploration and research.
The programme provides funding for early-stage exploration, critical minerals development and research projects that may not yet attract private investors.
Under Shinkafi’s leadership, the SMDF continues to promote investment in mineral exploration, improve geological knowledge and support efforts to identify economically viable mineral deposits across the country.
The Fund also works with professional bodies, research institutions, government agencies and exploration companies to strengthen Nigeria’s mining industry and encourage the sustainable development of its mineral resources.
NSEG said stronger collaboration between mining financiers and geoscience professionals was necessary to reduce exploration risks, attract investment and unlock Nigeria’s mineral potential.
Shinkafi was elected into the Class of Honorary Fellows following a decision of the Society’s Council at its 80th meeting held on September 26, 2026.

The award was presented during the opening ceremony of NSEG’s 5th Annual International Conference in Kaduna.
