Crisis is brewing at the Federal Polytechnic Ugep in Cross River State over the planned appointment of a new rector.
Students of the institution staged a peaceful protest to the Governor’s Office in Calabar, opposing what they described as a move to appoint a non-indigene as rector.
Carrying placards reading “Respect Catchment Area Policy” and “Our Indigene Deserves the Rector Position,”
The students urged both the Federal and State Governments to uphold the established selection process.
According to student leader Stephen Etem, the screening exercise conducted by the polytechnic’s governing council last year produced a Cross River indigene as the highest-scoring candidate.
However, students say there are indications that the candidate’s name could be replaced.
The students warned that altering the process could threaten peace within the institution.
In response, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Intelligence, Goddie Akpama, appealed for calm and advised students to submit their grievances through proper channels.
