Delta State Police Command says a suspected kidnap kingpin has died during a gun duel with operatives, while several members of his gang have been arrested in Sapele.
The State Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, who briefed newsmen in Asaba, said the gang operated under the guise of security volunteers to carry out criminal activities.
He identified the deceased suspect as Liberty Kunu, also known as “Commander Liberty” or “Double Agent.”
According to the Commissioner, the gang had abducted three persons at Boyo Road junction in Sapele.
One of the victims escaped and reported to the police, while the other two were allegedly robbed of valuables worth about nine million naira before regaining their freedom.
The Police Commissioner said following repeated complaints of kidnapping and other crimes linked to the suspect, the Divisional Police Officer in Sapele was directed to intensify efforts to track the gang.
Operatives of the CP Special Assignment Team, in collaboration with the Sapele Division, later arrested Liberty Kunu and other suspects, including Twale Golly, Michael Kunu, Israel Ugwu, Ogaga Power and Mercy Kunu. Five pump-action guns, a Beretta pistol and other weapons were recovered.

Further investigation, according to the Commissioner, revealed that the suspect allegedly belonged to the Aye confraternity and was in possession of an AK-47 rifle.
Police said that while leading operatives to recover the rifle at Ibada-Elume community, the team was ambushed by suspected gang members.
A gun battle ensued, during which Liberty Kunu and some officers sustained injuries.
He was later confirmed dead at a hospital in Sapele
