Several local bread, or “gurasa,” bakeries were set ablaze by suspected thugs in seven quarters of Dala Local Government Area, Kano City, late Tuesday night into the early hours of Wednesday.
The affected areas include Dala, Rijya Biyu, Aikawa, Dukurawa, Shatsari, and Kabawa Quarters.
Fortunately, no lives were lost during the attacks.
The District Head of Arewa in Dala, Farouk Muhammad Yola, described the incident as unfortunate and linked it to drug abuse and thuggery among youths.
He added that the fires may have been set deliberately to distract residents, though no thefts were reported.
A vehicle and part of the residence of the Rijya Biyu Ward Head were also vandalised and set on fire.
The Kano State Fire Service responded to distress calls around 11:30 p.m., controlling the blaze despite challenges posed by the thugs.
The agency called for police protection in such operations to ensure safety.
Authorities have urged community members to remain vigilant, report criminal elements, and assist in bringing the perpetrators to justice, while also calling on law enforcement to take decisive action to prevent a recurrence.
