President Bola Tinubu has announced that the University of Maiduguri in Borno State will now be renamed Muhammadu Buhari University in honour of the late former President, who died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82.
In a statement made on Thursday during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session held at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja, convened to pay tribute to Buhari. “May we now adopt the University of Maiduguri as the Muhammadu Buhari University,” Tinubu declared during the session.
Describing the late president as a man of integrity, discipline, and patriotism, Tinubu praised Buhari’s moral character and lifelong commitment to public service. “President Buhari was not a perfect man, no leader is, but he was, in every sense of the word, a good man, a decent man, an honourable man,” he said.
Tinubu highlighted Buhari’s humility and his resistance to the trappings of power and fame. “His patriotism was lived more in action than in words,” he added.
Reflecting on their political journey, Tinubu recalled their alliance in 2015 that ended the long-standing rule of the People’s Democratic Party, marking Nigeria’s first peaceful transition of power between political parties. “We stood together, he and I… and when he was sworn in, he led with restraint and governed with dignity,” Tinubu noted.
The renaming of the university serves as a national tribute to Buhari’s enduring legacy and impact on Nigerian politics and governance.
