President Bola Tinubu has proposed significant judicial reforms, seeking Senate approval to increase the number of judges in key Nigerian courts.
In a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, the President requested an amendment to the Court of Appeal Act to raise the number of justices from 70 to 110 to address the growing case backlog.
President Tinubu also transmitted a bill to increase the number of Federal High Court judges from 50 to 90.
He urged the Senate to expedite the consideration of these proposals, which have been referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further action.
In addition, the President has nominated Justice Oyewole Joseph Kayode for appointment to the Supreme Court and introduced a bill to establish an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre to settle appropriate cases outside the traditional court system.
Tinubu also sent a separate communication requesting amendments to 24 health sector bills, aiming to streamline over-bloated board memberships.
