President Bola Tinubu has formally signed the Electoral Act, 2022 (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill 2026 into law, concluding months of legislative work by the National Assembly.
The new law which replaces the old electoral framework was approved by both chambers of the National Assembly and transmitted to the presidency shortly after passage.
Key elements of the legislation include updated procedures for election timelines and result transmission.
It retains provisions for electronic transmission of results while allowing manual backup in areas with limited network coverage.
The passage and signing of the Electoral Act 2026 set the legal foundation for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, guiding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the conduct of future polls.
