Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Hadin Kai, have neutralised two high-profile Boko Haram commanders and several other fighters during coordinated operations in the Sambisa Forest and Mandara Mountains.
The commanders, identified as Basulhu and Ubaida, were among ten terrorists killed during the operations conducted under Operation Desert Sanity Five.
According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the Theatre Command, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, the encounter occurred when the terrorists attempted to plant improvised explosive devices and launch ambushes on troops.
He said soldiers responded with superior firepower, leading to the elimination of the insurgents and the recovery of arms, ammunition, motorcycles, explosives, communication equipment and other logistics.
The statement added that troops also foiled an infiltration attempt by Boko Haram and ISWAP elements from Cameroon into Nigeria near the Galakura area, forcing the insurgents to retreat.
The military says the sustained operations are aimed at degrading terrorist capabilities and denying them freedom of movement across the North-East.
