The United Nations Population Fund UNFPA has reaffirmed it commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance the well-being of women, children and vulnerable population in Zamfara State.
UNFPA Deputy Country Representative, Koessan Kuawu, made this known during a courtesy visit to Governor Dauda Lawal at the Government House in Gusau.
He stated that the visit aimed to discuss collaborative efforts in healthcare, women’s empowerment, and population management, among other critical areas.
Mr. Kuawu commended Governor Lawal’s administration for its commitment to strengthening healthcare services, particularly in maternal and child health, family planning, and gender-based violence (GBV) prevention.

“We seek a world where every childbirth is safe—no maternal mortality. No woman should die giving birth. We want a world where every pregnancy is wanted, where families have the choice to decide the number of children they want and the spacing between them,” he said.
He emphasized UNFPA’s focus on ensuring the full realization of young people’s potential, particularly girls, given the unique challenges they continue to face.
“We work extensively on maternal health, voluntary childbirth spacing, gender-based violence, and other harmful practices. Additionally, UNFPA supports governments in conducting censuses and generating data to aid planning and development efforts,” he added.
Mr. Kuawu reiterated the Fund’s commitment to supporting Zamfara State in reproductive health, youth empowerment, and women’s rights, stressing that strong partnerships are essential for sustainable development.
Earlier, Governor Dauda Lawal emphasized his administration’s willingness to collaborate with development partners to enhance healthcare services and human development in Zamfara.
