The United States Department of Defense is set to deploy about 200 additional troops to Nigeria in the coming weeks to support the country’s fight against Islamist militants.
A U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the personnel will focus on training Nigerian forces and providing technical expertise.
The troops are expected to be stationed at different locations across the country and will reinforce a small U.S. military team already operating in Nigeria.
According to the official, the American forces currently on ground assist Nigerian authorities with intelligence support, particularly in identifying potential terrorist targets.
The additional deployment will not involve direct combat operations.
The development comes amid renewed security cooperation between both countries, following recent tensions in bilateral relations.
U.S. President Donald Trump had previously criticised Nigeria’s handling of attacks on Christian communities and signaled stronger American involvement in addressing the country’s security challenges.
Reports indicate that U.S. naval forces had earlier carried out missile strikes targeting suspected terrorists, in coordination with Nigerian intelligence.
The latest deployment underscores ongoing U.S. support for Nigeria’s efforts to tackle insurgency and restore stability in affected regions.
