The Vice-Chancellor of North West University Sokoto, Professor Muktar Umar Bunza, has strongly encouraged students to consider Library and Information Science (LIS) as a vital and promising career choice.
Professor Bunza shared this advice during a visit from the Library Registration Council of Nigeria (LRCN) at the university’s Sokoto campus.
He described the LIS field as critical in today’s information-driven world, where the need for skilled professionals to manage and navigate vast amounts of data has never been greater.
The Vice-Chancellor emphasized that the field of LIS goes far beyond the traditional image of shelving books, explaining that it forms the foundation of the knowledge economy, supports research, and plays a key role in promoting informed citizenship.
He also highlighted the integration of digital technology, data management, archival preservation, and cybersecurity within the curriculum.
Professor Bunza further pointed out that there is a shortage of qualified LIS professionals in the country, making graduates from the program highly employable.
Earlier, Ambassador Jafaru Abdullahi Wase, the team leader from LRCN and its Registrar, mentioned that the visit aimed to assess the LIS program’s standards, facilities, and alignment with national professional benchmarks.
He commended the university for its commitment to LIS education, particularly praising the Vice-Chancellor for his strong advocacy for the profession.
