A close aide of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the former Rivers State governor may defect from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the aide, Wike’s planned defection will be timed close to the elections and is expected to involve many of his political allies within and outside Rivers State.
The source said the move is aimed at strengthening the APC and weakening opposition parties.
The aide also claimed that internal ambitions by governors within the PDP could further deepen the party’s crisis ahead of 2027.
On the political crisis in Rivers State, the aide said impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara were not initiated by Wike but by the State House of Assembly, citing alleged failure by the governor to honour agreements reached with lawmakers.
He added that President Bola Tinubu had directed security and administrative arrangements in the state, with instructions for cooperation between the Sole Administrator and the FCT Minister.
As of the time of this report, neither Wike nor the PDP has officially reacted to the claims.
