The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Dr. Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary through improved funding and infrastructure.
Speaking during an inspection of the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal complex under construction in Daki-Biyu and judges’ residential quarters in Katampe District, the Minister said a strong and independent judiciary remains central to sustaining democracy.
Dr. Wike noted that the judiciary relies largely on the executive for funding and infrastructure, stressing that providing befitting workspaces and secure accommodation for judicial officers is not an attempt to influence them but a necessary support for effective service delivery.
He explained that the Court of Appeal complex is between 85 and 90 percent completed, while 40 residential houses are being constructed for judges of the FCT High Court, Court of Appeal and Federal High Court, with additional plans for the National Industrial Court.
According to the Minister, the housing initiative will enhance security and welfare, as many judges currently reside in private neighbourhoods, sometimes close to litigants appearing before them.
Dr. Wike also inspected the “House of Courts” project, which includes official residences for heads of courts.
He described the development as unprecedented and aimed at institutional strengthening rather than personal benefit.
The Minister expressed satisfaction with the pace of work, stating that most of the projects are expected to be completed and presented to President Tinubu by mid-year for formal handover to the judiciary.
