Presidential Candidate of the last General Election, Peter Obi, says Nigerian government harbors more corrupt individuals than the ‘yahoo boys‘ in wider society.
Obi stated this at Nexford University’s 4th graduation ceremony in Lagos,
Obi whobis the guest speaker at the event decried the misuse of public resources by officials, describing the country as a “crime scene” of systemic corruption.
“When we talk about vices, it’s not just Yahoo boys. There are actually more Yahoo people in government than outside” he stressed.
“The entire country has been turned into a crime scene, with people inside and outside stealing,” he stated.
Obi who urged the graduates to become agents of change, advocating integrity and responsibility emphasized the need for strong leadership.
“It’s about leadership and igniting the future. It’s not rocket science, but it requires strong character and the ability to resist wrongdoing,” he said.
He encouraged the graduates to leverage their education to contribute to building a better society.
“You are victims of Nigeria because our generation and the one before us refused to do what is right, and now you’re bearing the consequences,” Obi added.
Obi highlighted the role of online education in addressing Nigeria’s educational challenges.
Drawing comparisons to successful models in India, Pakistan, and Turkey, he called for a hybrid approach that combines digital and physical learning.
“We need to invest in mass education because it is a critical tool for development. The more educated a society is, the more developed it becomes,” he emphasized.
