Nigeria has restated its commitment to global sustainability efforts.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, stated this during the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week in the United Arab Emirates.
Speaking at the event, Ambassador Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to sustainable development, climate action, and energy transition, emphasizing the nation’s leadership role in Africa’s green energy transition.
He noted Nigeria’s alignment with the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.
Ambassador Tuggar described the event as a critical platform for international collaboration.
“The Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week provides an important platform for nations to collaborate, innovate, and accelerate solutions to global sustainability challenges. Nigeria is committed to fostering international partnerships and implementing policies that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.”
The Minister outlined Nigeria’s initiatives, including the Decade of Gas Initiative, which promotes natural gas as a transitional energy source while advancing investments in solar, wind, and hydroelectric power.
He reaffirmed the government’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 and highlighted ongoing projects such as afforestation programmes, renewable energy infrastructure, and climate-resilient agriculture.
Ambassador Tuggar called for increased support for Africa in climate financing, technology transfer, and capacity-building, stressing inclusivity in global sustainability efforts.
“The world is at a critical juncture where the choices we make today will define the legacy we leave for future generations. Nigeria stands ready to collaborate with our global partners to ensure that no nation or region is left behind in the quest for a sustainable future.”
The Minister thanked the UAE for hosting the event and fostering dialogue on critical sustainability issues.
